Not really, i prefer eddings, feist and goodkind. AD&D is ok to read a little but since i am not a player i never really get into those.
I used to play AD&D games many years ago but I did not really read the books.

My wife on the other hand has collected and read several times over roughly 400 fantasy books. Some of her favorites are Mercedes Lackey, L E Modesitt Jr, Robert Jordan, you mane it she's got it!

But for SciFi I like Heinlan, Clark, Anderson, Asimov, Bradbury and Herbert.

the loss of speech would be the lesser of the two evils. we got where we are because of 'exteligence' or the ability to amass a universaly accesable store of information which can be added to and expanded so that every generation adds to it and refers back to it. without it barely any of our science, music and none of our literature would exist. we would be cave men.

I'm actually leaning the other way and thinking that there would be a better chance of survival as a language-based society. No immediate utensils are needed to communicate making for ease of especially the spontaneous need to communicate a thought.

There are many tribes living in secluded parts of the world without any writing whatsoever. However they almost always do paint on each other to indicate social status and other various conditions.

Gooblefudge - I misread your response...sorry....🙄

I'm leaning the same way you are on this, and I also suffer from occasional loss of sight....😕

suddenly losing speech would impact the world more but in a positive way. There would be less oportunity for despotism as it tends to breed on rhetoric and the theatre of oratory.

I don't know if this distinction has been made, but speech is not the same as language. Language is a system of grammatical and syntaxal rules that define communication. By definition, the spoken word and the written word are language, though in some cultures the spoken and the written languages can be different.

Though, if you mean language as just speech, then I'd say speech any day. I'm sick of politics, news anchors, political pundits and mass media in general. Nothing beats reading a decent paper or a good book. 🙂

If we want to talk about impact, I think the loss of speech instead of the written word would affect the world in a much more positive way. We would all have to think more before we write. Politics and war would be downplayed quite a bit. The world could go on communicating through the internet as well without any problems.

Although, judging from some of the crap I read on the internet maybe my whole idea of writing forcing people to think before they communicate is trash. I don't know.
