@eladar saidAgreed. The real question should have been "Who benefits when America gets more democracy, good and hard?" More and more it becomes "mob rule".
Politicians and the rich people who pull their strings. Those are the ones who benefit.
Powerful people can control enough public opinion that they have no fear of democracy. We all think we make up our own minds about politics, but the vast majority of us just have our opinions assigned to us by whatever news we consume and/or social media algorithm we're subject to. Pure democracy is nothing more than 3 wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner.
What the powerful people want most is for us to forget that we're a Republic where the government has limited power even if the majority wants it to have use more power.

And While I have you, you can google Democracy and find that it leads to Mob Rule. Could you comment on that??
And could you comment without the Sonhouse inflections? Thanks. And it is OK to say that you are OK with Mob rule, but please expound. Thx.

@techsouth saidYou and Joe have good points about democracy being mob rule, like instituted slavery.
Agreed. The real question should have been "Who benefits when America gets more democracy, good and hard?" More and more it becomes "mob rule".

However, the constitution is supposed to protect the innocent minorities against the unruly mob.
that's the difference.
@techsouth saidMore like 1 wolf and 300 sheep though right?

@wildgrass saidCould be some of each. In some cases, it's 1 sheep and 3 wolves, in other cases it is 1 wolf and 3 sheep. That's the beauty of a well functioning republic. It has no built in assumption that the majority is always right nor that the majority always wrong.
More like 1 wolf and 300 sheep though right?
By your question, it seems you are subconsciously holding the belief that the majority is always the victim and always has a more fair plan than the minority.
@techsouth saidwe need more thinking like this in the Forum. I nominate Sonhouse to go forth and find members that think.

@earl-of-trumps saidIt seems to smack of mob rule to have 51% prevail on some votes. Why not 60, or 66%. That way, minorities have a voice. I'm sure Suzianne would agree, why can't we all?

@AverageJoe1
I would think that the liberal dogma would want minorities ,of all people for god sakes, to have a voice????

@techsouth saidOk I appreciate the clarification. It sounded like your original analogy "Pure democracy is nothing more than 3 wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner" pointed to a dysfunctional and unbalanced form of government in which wolves eventually eat each other.

But it is much more balanced and nuanced. No I don't think the majority is the victim. The republic faces a number of decisions decided by different groups with different interests. Not all voters have equal interests, but not all votes have equal consequences.
@sonhouse saidThe USA is not a true democracy and has not been for a very long time. Only land owners were allowed to vote when the USA was founded. Women were not allowed to vote for a long time. Negroes were not able to vote for a long time. Even in the 60s Negroes had to get a voter to help Negroes get the right to vote.
If we follow the money, the forensics, who wins when we lose democracy here in the US?
The corporate news media influences people who to vote for and who not to vote for. Media attention means everything. If they ignore a candidate few people vote for them.
You all lose. The parasitic elites benefit because they benefit from a dictatorship. This is a plutocracy and you are helping them keep it that way by condoning it.

the US is not, and has never been a democracy, and was never intended to be.
@mott-the-hoople saidIt was intended to be a representative democracy. It is not that either. It didn't represent women for a long time. It didn't represent Negroes for a long time.

the US is not, and has never been a democracy, and was never intended to be.
The corporate news media uses it's influence to determine who people vote for. They didn't want Ron Paul or Mike Gravel to be president so they ignored them as much as possible and it worked. People vote for who they hear about the most on the news. The rigging is in plain sight, but most people don't see through the propaganda. Decent propaganda fools people into thinking they came to their own conclusion so most people do not see how they have been influenced by it.
@mott-the-hoople saidSo ....... Your proposal for a solution is ????
