John Mclaughlin was in a mindblowing fusion band called The Mahavishnu Orchestra." Those guys (and they included Jan Hammer and Billy Cobham) created music that hadsn't been heard since or before it's debut. The album "Birds of Fire" is absolutely well worth a listen.

His collaborations with Carlos Santana are also very noteworthy.

Yep, the track 'One Word' off that album is one of the best things I've ever heard.
