A good article on private "regulatory" firms and the power of free markets over a command and conquer, er, um, command and control approach:

Disappointed. I thought this thread was about Thatcher.

Wow, you and Mr. Goodman are really biased. Krugman's article is much better than Goodman gives it credit for. By any fair estimation, It's far from "over the top."

"O.K., I’m not saying that Mr. Friedman directly caused tainted spinach and poisonous peanut butter. But he did help to make our food less safe, by legitimizing what the historian Rick Perlstein calls “E. coli conservatives”: ideologues who won’t accept even the most compelling case for government regulation."

Seems pretty accurate to me.

I'll assume that by "good article" you mean to say that it was written by (good)man.

I hadn't read the Krugman piece until you posted the link -- thanks. This is an interesting conundrum when you consider how many products, including pharmeceuticals and foodstuffs come from overseas, which are mostly out of the reach of the FDA. I still like the idea touted in the Goodman piece about a private "regulatory" agency. In this case, the market saw a problem and it responded.
