Why do online personas tend to migrate and suck?

I can't imagine in-person relations devolving as quickly as they have in the myriad chatrooms across the blogosphere.

Well...not until Trump that is.

Has he empowered people to reveal their true "nasty"?
Or...are people just casting themselves to type?
