None of the reasons so far have proved to be much more than half-truths and lies. So what is the REAL REASON why?

Iraq's position is in the centre of the middle eastern nations. Maybe it wasn't so much about the wrongs that Iraq had done as such, but a way of America getting it's filty hands on Jesus for the 'possible' sins of others. On your bike Bush... Go Home................ 😳.
The reason Iraq was invaded was basically because Saddam was a bad guy that we all wanted rid of, there was no other reason.

The problem is, once your in its a bit tricky getting back out.

Bush also shows little signs of wanting to care about Iraqi people [where are these signs, now he has been given one option?].

Well, there are plenty of other countries with bad rulers. By your logic, why don't we attack them as well, and kill everyone except who we went in to get? Now please do not mistake me. I fully support our troops! They are superb people who have a nasty job that I don't envy. My problem is with the leadership who put these wonderful people in such a hostile environment without due cause.

I just have trouble understanding why the Christian nation flocks behind someone who has lied to us from the beginning and mocked our religious leaders when their, and the cameras, backs are turned. It was obvious that he knew that there were no weapons of mass destruction, yet he lied and told us that there were weapons of mass destruction. I believe and don't quote me on this until I find proof, but I believe that there was conflicting evidence from the beginning that the terrorist group responsible for 9/11 was even in Iraq. Now it's time for an opinion of mine, so take this with a grain of salt. I believe that Bush only wanted to go to Iraq because of all the trouble Iraq had caused his father in his presidency.

The most plausible reasons I've seen have to do with a sense of 'unfinished business' after the 1st Gulf War and Bush senior.

There are variations on a theme. One version is simply that Bush jr. was upset over the plot to assassinate Bush sr. A more interesting version is that the neo-cons had wanted to push on in the 1st Gulf War and get rid of Saddam then and there, but that Bush sr. had disallowed it - in his view, the purpose of the war was to end the invasion of Kuwait, and once that was done it was over.

Of course, that doesn't answer why they were so keen to get rid of Saddam back then either. But it shifts your time frame for looking at the question.

Well I can't blame Bush Jr. for being mad about the assassination attempt on Bush Sr. It doesn't excuse a war and I certainly hope that that was not the case.

The reason is simple. Saddam was selling oil for Euros, not dollars. While oil is being sold for dollars, we are able to tax any country that wishes to exchange their currency so that they can buy oil. While oil is not being sold for dollars, we don't get to tax people.

Oil in Iraq is now being sold for dollars. The only problem is that we are having a hard time exiting the country and tons of people are dying. At least we're still able to tax the world.

This isn't Bush's fault, it is the fault of our government at large. It shows a real lack of understanding to attribute the entirety of the world's problems on one man, don't you think?

On further reflection, it occurred to me that the reason may boil down to:

It's next to Iran.
