Debates

The Ten Commandments are going up inside US schools, turning secular education into religious indoctrination. But, why so obsessed with the commandments? Why not something like the Beatitudes? Please explain. Here's Kurt Vonnegut:

“For some reason, the most vocal Christians among us never mention the Beatitudes (Matthew 5). But, often with tears in their eyes, they demand that the Ten Commandments be posted in public buildings. And of course, that's Moses, not Jesus. I haven't heard one of them demand that the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes, be posted anywhere. 'Blessed are the merciful' in a courtroom? 'Blessed are the peacemakers' in the Pentagon? Give me a break!”

LOL. Mercy? Compassion? Serving the marginalized? These are dirty words for modern conservatives.

There goal is to turn the US into a christian nation.

Beatitudes is Christ. Bless the poor and the persecuted. If that went up in schools, conservatives would scream that it was a liberal indoctrination campaign.

Maybe people got tired of the last 10 years of schools obsessing over LGBTQ and BLM

And you call that secular education? LMFAO 😂
The ten commandments don't counteract BLM. Idiotic.

The beatitudes might, though.

Let's vote in a president who has violated at least two of the ten commandments then?

What a great role model.

Why not the beatitudes? They are direct quotes from Jesus.

People dont necessarily select role models for leaders. They select problem solvers, especially when the prior administration was a failure. So regardless of the mans morals and history, if the electorate believes he can solve problems, they will vote him in.

Role models should be your parents, and many Americans [especially in the black community] have failed in this regard.

Put both.

Literally no one other than you is arguing that. I've heard politicians talk about the ten commandments in schools for decades but nary a whimper about adding beatitudes Jesus quotes.

It's not that Christians don't like Jesus but they just don't like what Jesus said.

Exactly.

But they are not actually FOR Jesus.

They NEVER espouse what Jesus actually taught.

Their philosophy is always about whom to shun, whom to reject.

Never about accepting them for who they are. Never about love for their neighbor, especially the downtrodden.

They are not Christian. They are "Christian".

CiNOs, you might say.

The genius of the Kurt Vonnegut snippet is to expose the fact all the people saying we are Christian nation would have to admit that we are not if we only put up Jesus quotes in the halls instead of the Ten Commandments.
