There are 2 main reasons the Republican party was defeated so badly in 2008. They are the same 2 reasons the Democrats were defeated in 1980. 1. They stopped doing the will of the American people, and instead, pushed there own agenda. 2. They had become too radical in there conservative agenda, just as the Democrats had become too liberal in 1980. A more moderate conservative agenda, and being more willing to listen to the will of most American's will be necessary if the G O P wants back in power.

By the way, 6 points is not what I'd call 'so badly defeated', considering the situation.

Oops, I forgot about that one. A severe economic down turn is a fatal blow to the party in power. I think most people who study politics would agree that the economic problems we had going into the election helped Obama.
