What are your thoughts on cutting spending to the military? Is the current military an example of 'big government'? Maybe increase the number of contractor-soldiers and let the market dictate a lower cost?

Your children will probably have to work hard to get a scholorship if they want to attend a private college, or excel in sports...there are lots of quality public colleges too...start saving early (years before you even have a child), and plan wisely...good luck...you'll need it...

nice post and thanks for the words of luck... i'll need them.
still on taxes
i think it's important to realize that government spending does not always 'have to' equate to government waste. it's a shame that poor fiscal oversight has created this general attitude (eg. votes decided by the politician who can lower your taxes and not necessarily manage them).
as you say, the military is part of 'necessary' government spending. i absolutely agree. they're the most underpaid and overworked federal employees you'll ever come across. they're the best 'investment' of tax payer's money this country has and will ever see. it's too bad no one has the insight to transfer this over to other parts of our society such as education.
i'm sick of hearing tales from europeans of practically free higher education available to all who qualify. and i'm even more disappointed in our ivy league schools who favor children of alumni... ahem.
if we (it's our taxes) can come up with the world's greatest military we should be able to do the same with our sorry educational system.

Hmmm. Well, when the Bush administration decided to cut health care benefits for over 100.000 middle-income veterans, and proposed doubling the co-pay costs for prescription drugs for veterans, and closed down a bunch of VA hospitals, don't ...[text shortened]... the line for us, but your health isn't a budget priority."
😕
IF... and I say IF... we are to have a high quality military, we have to do much more. I would say that for the enlisted up through E8 there must be at least a doubling of pay in the next three years. If we are serious about a volunteer army.
And benefits to match. Fully funded "family left behind" funding to include housing, medical and support.
Excellent post, and you get a recommend sir.
Originally posted by StarValleyWyThat said, the President sends a proposed budget to Congress, which is often the starting place for budget drafting. Further, he can threaten to veto a budget that does not match up with his priorities. So while Constitutionally the House "proposes" a budget bill, we cannot overlook the influence that the President has, especially when both houses are controlled by his party, and when he claims to "work well" (as he said on the matter in the debates) with the congressional leadership on planning funding bills.

The exec "proposes.".
Only congress starts and finishes.
And you lack the same conviction in the constitution as I possess.
Congress people have to face me every two years. It is by design that only they can steal my money. <edit> So whoever is smart enough to tell me that "We need to increase our pay to soldiers"... wins. I am no longer just a redneck. I am a democrat if that is the guy who says she will vote for my belief.
