The BBC World Service is to launch an Arabic television news channel in 2007, the corporation has confirmed.
The channel will initially broadcast 12 hours a day and will be the BBC's first publicly funded global TV service."

BBC World Service is already the most successful, trusted and respected voice in the Middle East

The World Service is funded from grants by the Foreign Office, not from the license fee.

A little research can save you from making snap judgements....

private tv wouldnt touch arabic television, is it true no american networks would carry the new al jazeera channel?

this isnt a first though, didnt american public service tv broadcast beyond the iron curtain?

so is this state funded propaganda?
Definitely not propoganda. I've listened to the BBC World Service for years and they give the UK government a kicking when necessary.

There will be some inherent Western bias, as is usual from a channel backed by a Western-government. They had some editorial problems with their first crack at an Arabic World Service Channel in the late 90s. Hopefully they would have learned from that.

Considering that in some countries, the World Service was their only source of reliable news, and is regarded by some people as the premier radio news source, I think they are justified in making that claim.

[/i]I find it utterly amazing that people can think like this.
What you are actually saying is that if something costs money (which doesn't benefit you directly) or doesn't raise money...it shouldn't be.

Somethings, you know, can be done for the greater good of humanity, for aesthetical purposes, just for the hell of doing something and/or prestige.

However, I presume this has more to do with the British and US governments wanting to undermine the influence of Al Jazeera.

On the other side, maybe I shouldn't be so cynical, the BBC webpage can be read in Arab as well.
