In the recovery console chkdsk only has a /p and a /r switch which I ran yesterday and the computer has the same problem. Normally chkdsk /f will fix the problem but in the recovery console the commands are limited.

that's for XP.
SOLVED I actually solved it by installing to a new location and then booting to the new install location then manually fixing the errors in the original installation, rebooting and voila. After backing up my data a reinstall is in order, but i can leave that for a few days.
Its a pity the MS recovery console is crap. On linux there are LIVECDs and so on.

Use Linux and stop whinging then.
Its good to maintain a windows installation to play windows games and use a GUI.

Originally posted by jimslyp69Run level 5 runs the GUI but one can skip installing X and run on level 3 then use it as a server. If you have a 2 GB RAM Linux Server and a 2 GB RAM Windows server, windows will "eat" quite a lot of resources just running the un-needed GUI. That is why Linux makes a powerful robust server sitting in the background not crashing like windows.

There are flavours of Linux you can use as a desktop and install the GUI thus avoiding windows altogether.

BSOD 0000218 stop 218 {Registry File Failure}, cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE. Computer continuously reboots.
Loading the partition with a recovery tool says "1516 error Partition improperly dismounted".
Any ideas?
