I've got a gorgeous three player chess board sitting on the table beside me. It is, supposedly, possible to play, although very tricky. I have never tried. It's hard enough trying to persuade one of my mates to play chess with me, let alone two!! Cretins πŸ˜‰

Back in my college days I remember once playing on a 4-set board (4x8 half board attached to each side of the 8x8 board) with a couple of strong chess experts. The 4-sets/2-player team aspect really multiplies the difficulty in planning and execution of strategy. Headaches are guaranteed playing this chess variant.

Playing a normal chess game with two teams of two, each player taking alternate moves with no conferring can be instructive or just fun. Its easy to misunderstand your team mate's ideas.

I remember creating a four-player chess set in highschool, where there were 2X8 extended rows on each of the for sides of a regular 64 squared chess set; it was loads of fun.
