Speaking of Christmas, here is a local tradition which never seems to change - the giant straw yule goat in Gävle:

It was totally destroyed again three days before Christmas last year.

The gift giving then happens when you bring souvenirs back to the people where you live and work, although this is not just an Idul Fitri thing; handing out souvenirs ~ especially foodstuff that is a local speciality ~ is customary after all trips taken.
Nothing in the shops yet, they generally focus on Fathers Day (early September) and after that all hell breaks loose ...
