The logical next step for the US is to allow for each State to function as Liberal or Conservative. Separate laws divided on controversial issues, separate bureaucracies to manage them, separate budgets to pay for them. The alternative is that the US continue to implode over a handful of issues, mainly abortion, gun-control, and gay rights.

Just spilt up into separate countries and form a union between them. It has worked wonders in Europe.

Before considering any union you need to provide for thousands of years of individual cultural development and hundreds of years of varying economic modelling; then add in different religions, different social structures, different currencies, mixed allies, enemies and various boarder, clan and religious battles. Then top it off with a complex last century including apocalyptic style racial oppression and global level war. Then bind it all up for a few decades with union string pop it in the pressure cooker, keep the lid on tight and claim it's all good in the pot.
