Same thing happened to a buddy of mine at work, put up his car for sale on Ebay and got the same kind of response and found out his bank had another check listed with the exact same check # but differant price. It is a common scheme I think in Nigeria. Nobody has been nailed yet but the FBI knows all about it.
Count it as a kind of IQ test. If you fall for it, the key is you get a check and send them a check but there is a three day delay at least before the other check clears, but the guy on the other end already cashes his and runs with the money before you find out your check is worthless.
Originally posted by sonhouseWay I read into it was that, they send you a cheque for ridiculous sum. SO ridiculous you think 'They honestly can't be dishonest'. Then you cash cheque. Brilliant! They have your address. You can't screw them because of this. Down side is that when you send your cheque back for the difference, it has all your lovely bank details on it, and they wipe the lot out of your account. But your theory stands up too. Either way, I reckon I'll leave it.

Originally posted by jimslyp69Its worse than that. Suppose you deposit the check and write out one for the other party. They cash YOUR check, get your money out of your account, even if they don't try to take every penny, just the amount of the check. Suppose you send them a 5000 Pound check and you deposit Their 6000 pound check. So that 5000 pounds gets taken out of your account before you find the 6000 pound check is phony. You have to cover the 6000 pound check anyway so now you are out 11,000 pounds. Trust me, the bank isn't going to just fold on this, they will say we want our money. The check you just deposited is no good and it is in your account so you better make it up.
