I don't disagree about the common themes, but I think there are some new ideas from time to time, no?
I've never seen Sophies Choice but magnolia and Eyes wide shut are just

JOURNEY AND RETURN.

memento is Overcoming the Monster, with the monster being his memory disability. Man vs himself in other words

There are 7 basic plot lines that virtually every movie, book and tv show fall into.

My question, i suppsoe, is once you've seen a bunch of each type of plot line, don't you guys get bored of watching the same basic type of movie or show? What do you guys find interesting in a movie/show that is basically the same as things you've already seen?

1. Over o Riches - self explanatory really. e.g. Cinderella &
derivatives (all 27,000 of them)!!!
The Hobbit looks like it's 1, 2, 3 and 7.

Oops, no, Bilbo was rich from the beginning. So no 7.

Oh for sure you can find many elements of all 7 plot lines in the same movie/book/tv show.

The point here is that it rarely deviates from these basic 7 and my original question is why do people find watching the same basic story over and over interesting?

You've made them so vague that there is tremendous variation in each one, thus staving off boredom.

I bet most of those movies are about people. How can you watch movies about people over and over?

Same idea.

Variation? Well, ok, lets try something. You pick a few movies you like and (as long as i've seen it too) I'll give you a movie that is similar

Sophie's choice is also tragedy.
But yes, since Sophie is actually the antagonist in the story, it is basically a journey and "coming to age" story about the narrator.

Because the plot line isn't actually interesting.
The way a story is told is far more important.
The interaction between characters.

And then, of course, there's recognition.

Mulholland Drive is a criticism of the Hollywood industry. It's not a tribute to any particular film, although any reference to other films can be explained in the light of this criticism.

But there are not really answers at the end of the movie as you would usually expect of a quest - I think perhaps it might be one that slips the net.

IMO, I think that it doesn't, but it goes to show that it doesn't really matter if a plot line fits one of the categories or not.

The categories are so vague, that even very original and thoughtful plot lines can fit.

You're beginning to answer your own question here. There may be a limited number of basic plots, but there are a huge variety in the ways in which they can be implemented. And that's what matters, not some general classification.
