I was thinking it might be very nice if rhp could support a charitable program in which a small portion of the membership fee was used to support children-teens who wish to learn to play chess. Perhaps $1 or so, which could be used to purchase chess sets for clubs or schools, or even individuals in impoverished areas. I wouldn't mind paying $ more to fund a program such as this. What about you?
I thnk that any connection between subscription & the charity would ultimately be taking money out of C&R's funds. Sure, the charity money could be added as extra to the subs, but this might be enough to discourage some from joining or might mean that any future subscription increases (eg. in line with inflation) might be more difficult to implement. A separated donation option might be feasable.
Then again, could we turn RHP 100% into a charity. I'd be a great tax dodge. If we can't make it swing as a charity, how about as a religion (also tax exempt) - I know there are enough worshipers here already

Everyone pays taxes and our governments should be creating a system where charities are no longer needed.
Instead of buying guns, bombs and bibles.

Only if it's a secular charity with no religious ties.
It could even be voluntary (mark this box if you wish to donate an additional amount to the charity).
I saw an episode of Oprah recently, where she went to Africa and visited children there. She took them such simple gifts- a school uniform, a toy, a book, and it was as though they had been incredibly blessed.
The thought of these children having an opportunity to learn chess and enjoy the pleasures of our favorite game is very gratifying.

If you want to take something to give to the people take pens!!! They are massively prized especially by the schoolchildren yet they cost next to nothing to us and they are small so you can carry quite a few boxes of them.
Little things can mean so much. One girl was over the moon when I agreed to give her a pair of socks

Who would administer the fund?
How would the money be allocated?
Who would decide who got what?
Who would oversee the process and audit the books? etc
You couldn't really expect Russ and Chris to take on any of this.
