The second album by The Streets (aka Mike Skinner) was released recently....jarring beats, the stilted delivery of a kid reading poetry for the first time, lyrics about returning DVDs, mobile phone reception in one's kitchen, TV repair men. No individual song on it comes near to the string-laden soul-stirring spine-chilling 'Turn The Page' off the first album. And has an album ever been started with a track as rough as 'It Was Supposed To Be So Easy'?
And still, by the time the album closes, I'm having to literally do what track 10's title suggests. Then 11 completes the story. For every five people I meet that loathe it, there's one who loves it. Concept album, audiobook, story. For me, it's truly superb.
The Streets aside, is there any music you've recently discovered and fallen for?

I'm not a big fan of The Streets (as you know T). Very original, great lyrics but the stilted delivery grates on me like fingernails on a blackboard.
Is it all very clever or dumbed down? Is it one of those things that is 'so bad, it's good'? I still can't work out whether or not Skinner is taking the pi**.
Now Keane I do like. Recently discovered them when they played here at uni a few weeks back. Especially good are "Everybody's changing", "Somewhere only we know" and "We might as well be strangers". Strong melodies, lots of emotion, great vocals by Tom Chaplin. Compared a lot to Travis and Coldplay - in my opinion Keane are much better.

The Weakerthans. Just one song though, ''My Favorite Chords''; the rest is silly.
I just <obtained> some stuff by The Streets and was impressed, particularly with ''The Irony of it All''.
As for Keane - I'm trying ever so hard to form an opinion but my efforts are hampered, alas, by my falling into a deep slumber before any of their songs have finished.
Originally posted by T1000I think The Streets are great, and Mike Skinner is the most hilarious MC I think I've ever heard. It's so easy to listen to Original Pirate Material and just forget he's even rhyming, because it sounds so much like he's just talking or explaining himself. I've ordered their newest cd off cdnow.com and am still waiting for it to arrive, but I'm sure it'll at least be one of the better rap albums I've heard.😉
