I have a friend who I have been playing on this site for a long time--
it's a great way for us to keep in touch, but he's not a very good chess
player, I've beat him nine games straight. But after every single
game, he clicks "Rematch." This last time, he even gave me the
white pieces! After all my whining about how much I hate to lose, his
attititude has put things in a new perspective for me. He obviously
enjoys playing, or he wouldn't continue. And he obviously enjoys the
fact that this site enables us to remain in contact through something a
bit more enjoyable than plain e-mails. I'm sure he doesn't enjoy
losing, but that hasn't stopped him.
So, I've made two decisions as a result. First, and least, is that I
resigned against "Oceanwaves" and ate the points. Big f-ing deal.
Secondly, I've decided to try to continue the tradition of generosity
handed to me by Dave/Schliemann, and coach him through our next
game. Not that I'm all that great a player, but I can pass along what
knowledge I have. I'd rather make him a chess player for life than
keep winning.
Thanks, Coach.

Tim...I have the same kind of deal with my best friend. We play here
and although as he would put it "I take him behind the woodshed" we
get to stay in touch. At first he only played me..but since then I have
asked a few of the other people I have taught to play him and he is
now holding his own and having alot of fun...or so I hope. He is even
is the tourney...I kinda pressured him into that one though.
But yes...take the time to show him his mistakes from what you can
see and it will always help.
Teaching and seeing someone else do good is alot better a feeling
than being #1.
