I think the true winner on a chess site, such as this one, is the player with the lowest score.
And if two people have equally low scores, the player who's been playing the longest between them. Just because he/she is so pertinacious.
High scores mean nothing about enjoying the game. It just means that someone is good at it.
Someone who keeps losing and continues playing has to be either clinically insane or has to be someone who REALLY enjoys the game.
And I seriously think the winner is the person who enjoys the game most!

Sometimes we all get too focused on the 'achievment' aspect, and none more than me, which is a pity but it's human nature to a fault. Time for some of us to be looking inwards me thinks? What say you?

I've noted a few threads before on the subject of who's leading, winning and better than the rest and this morning as I was doing my daily peregrination of the the boards that I frequent, in a moment of unusual percipience, I pondered and typed the afore mentioned.
Nothing more than an observation and complete misuse of a thesaurus. I assure you. 🙂

We as a group need to be less driven by "personal achievment" and more persuaded to adopt a "personal development" mentallity. It can only help to calm some of our troubled waters.

In an effort to promote cultural blending, perhaps some of you highly-ranked players would care to come down to the dregs known as Sub-M World and give us a go at a contest. We're all the same as you folks up top (except for all the *ahem* 'frolics' we enjoy in the pits! 😀

Originally posted by eagles54this is a good idea, eagle54! i know we started a mentoring system in the original veggies clan thanks to the suggestion by misslead. it worked very well and we continue it in the veggiechess clan still.

there is no reason why this idea has to be restricted within clans.
there are lots of extremely enthusiastic and generous people here who would gladly take on a mentee even for a short period of time. this actually happens anyway, but on an informal basis.
perhaps we could consider having a mentor/mentee wanted thread in the chess forum on an ongoing basis?

Upon per-pending this idea, I must offer this per-sonal warning that per-sons per-sisting in per-using per-verse threads of this nature -- that is those with a per-ceptably high per-centage of per-fervid words -- do so at their own per-il, for the thread may contain per-iodic per-juring, exult in per-imeters of per-fidy, engage in per-vasive per-snickitiness, cause the per-fusion of per-dition, and maintain a general per-plexity of such nature that it will cause pains in your per-icranium in per-petuity.
