There was a time in my life when things seemed to be so much easier. I know those days are long gone, but hey are nice reflect back to. Days when a stick could have been the single greatest toy your inagination could use.
Think about it a second. A stick could easily be the sword that you (Peter Pan) used in your glorious battles against the dreaded Captian Hook. Yes I am that old. The gun in your defeat over the bad guys in the old west. or whatever your villian was in your part of the world.
If you found a big stick, well there was your baseball bat. There you were, imulating your favorite Ball player, and hitting that winning homerun agaist that rival ball team.
A tall enough stick could quickly become that dancing partner. or the rifle for the wartime era. I'm not trying to glorify war, but almost every kid in my day had a fascination with it, and as I said this was a simpler time. Television had been around for some time now and color TV was growing popularity, The only thing close to a home computer was pong.
It was your staff, as you quickly turned yourself into Bruce Lee, or Chuck Norris. Fighting off the Ninja's that always came out of the woodwork. Or the Staff of the King that ruled YOUR land(mine was my backyard, something I miss living in apartments). As you stomped your stick on the ground to proclaim your Law on all those who were there to listen to your comands(usual a selection of G.I, Joe's and those little green soldiers in the can.
It was your fishing pole. As you cast out your line into that deep blue ocean, knowing that your were going to land that great white shark!
The stick was your horse.usually a broken broom handle, as you rode into town to the local saloon to get into a bar room brawl with those same bad guys.
Today's world offers our children a great many things that, as when I was a child, would have never imagined. Electronic gadgets and gizmos the likes that has never been thought upon.
I watched my nephews the other day. I have 4. Watched them go outside to play. Their ages are from 12 to 7. They have Bikes, and scooters. Balls, and guns. Swimming toys (this is Florida after all) and a pool. At least 4 different nintendo type games. and 3 computers.
I see them drag all of their outdoor toys and leave them strewn about. Toys that I know alot of us would have that would have been the coolest thing we had ever seen when I was a kid, and all of them went and found their sticks to play.

Youth is so wasted in the young!
It is quite obviously well over your head if you can't see the point. It is a reflection, and trust me I am not lonely. You may find it boring because you can't relate. I don't know which is sadder then. My reflection on a simple time, or your inability to have one.

It was a simpler time KJ, and I'm glad I was young when I was as I couldnt cope with being young now.
I remember the unemployed, the riots, police brutality, poverty (compared with now), etc.
It seems that the children today have an easier time, in general (in Europe), than I did in the 70's and 80's.
I remember sticks becoming swords and large cardboard boxes becoming space ships.
What I'd really like is to see if the children of today have gained or lost in imagination and creativity.
Because I can't imagine that video games and DVD's which basically set everything out for you, can be as stimulating for the mind as say Lego.
Originally posted by shavixmirYes those things were certainly quite prevelent in my childhood days as well, as I am from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. As I reached my teen years, it held a more profound effect on me. but as a child of 6 or 7, I was far more interested in my next game, rather than the rest of the world.

I guess my message was a reflection on the childhood imagination, that is missplaced when we get older. That isn't to say that everyone forgets how to imagine these things, just children do it so much better, when given the chance.

Originally posted by catfoodtimHave you ever played "the logical journey of the zoombeenies"? Maybe my mom was just a hippy intent on raising strange children, but until i was six i thought everyone had that game and played for an hour before bed...
i suppose it wasnt all rosey in the 70s and 80s; compared with now it was harder as well as more straightforward.

Certainly 2 of the best imagination toys ever created. There was nothing you couldn't build or places you couldn't visit with them!

Ah, Lego. If there was a Lego Clan, I would join...
I have did not already lead a clan, I would have started a Lego clan. My childhood was purely build with Lego bricks, so to speak... I still have everything. Just need a child as an excuse to play fatherly with my child an Lego again...
