You were scammed.

The International Star Registry is not in the business of officially assigning star names; it is in the business of finding people willing to part with their money for a piece of paper that in a scientific sense means precisely nothing.
@vivify saidIts not a scam if people get $20 worth of satisfaction from showing off this piece of paper to people.

@lemondrop saidLucky devil.
I had a star named after me
from the official star registry
cost $20
it's in the milky way around 15 light years away
a red giant
an old
dying star
ready to go off on your ass
my eyes are getting bad

I tried to get a star named after me and had saved up the requisite $20.
Unfortunately my real name is Alfie Centuri and when I contacted the star registry they said they already had a star called that, or as close as makes no difference.
Bloody swines.
