About Language

Observations: (1) Only purpose of language (spoken or written) is to communicate. (2) Content of human communication extends over

an extraordinarily wide range... from a phone number on a napkin or cry or SOS for help to memorable orations and literary masterpieces.

(3) Similarly, there's a broad spectrum of communication sensibilities and styles... from those who paint precisely, as if by the numbers,

to those who ignore the rules and wishes of the mother tongue and paint off canvas. (4) Language has a texture and mind of it's own.

Both its forcefulness and subtle nuances are often driven by the literal sense becoming married with cadence, rhythm and tone of meaning.

(5) Language begins as fun for small children and remains enjoyable for adults. It is sufficiently flexible to lend opportunities for simple

coinage and outrageous personal innovations. (6) Effective daily use of language depends on sense of timing and occasion. Street slang

and idioms are often the best choice for getting specific jobs done. (7) Using language is somewhat like playing chess (and, for that matter,

even sex), in the RHP sense, that most everyone is doing it; it has to be done; but nobody's quite sure they're doing it the 'right' way.

Language is innacurate way of communicating. As we grow up and learn new words, each one of us give some slightly different attributes to it and each one of us gives to a single word slightly different meaning, based on own empiria or some other reason. Imagine then how much the whole system of words (sentences) can abberate from what original sentence creator wanted to say. If I am not mistaken, some famous XX. century litterar work discusses that topic, I just do not remember which.

This is the reason of numerous verbal misunderstandings and fights. I guess that can apply on RHP forums too 😛 In some cases that semantic problem can even destroy your life !!

Words are mere approximation, stylization of our thoughts and feelings no matter how eloquent we are.

If I only knew English better I could describe this thesis better 🙁

Here is a math analogy ; What I want to say is that with words you can describe the truth as imperfect as you can approximate the exact value of number pi in decimal system.

Title idea for your next general forum thread, "Chitchat". Would look something like this...

"Chitchat

Let's rephrase that. 'Chit or Chat'. Lowest common denominator posts.

Nothing upgraded. Americans unwelcome. Young folks only. Nobody old.

Hells Caretaker"

No sir, just throwing it out to confuse the younger members. Pall Mall means something very different to USA folks and our good friends in London. yes?
