A year ago I began keeping stats on how many people where rated in which bands. If you were between 1400 and 1499, you were put in the 1400 band and so forth. I could have broken it down more, but it is enough pain as it is.
Anyway, here are some things that have changed...
1) The number of Active, non-provisionals, has more than doubled from 3726 to 7724.
2) If you were the 3726th best player on the site last year, you were in the 600s. Now you are exactly at 1300 (when I typed this).
3) There was one player above 2200 (skeeter). Now there are 19 (have been for 2 months). There are also four above 2300 and 2 above 2400. Skeeter, now at 40, under 2100.
4) The average rating was 1306. The average rating is now...1306. It was up at 1311 back in February. I'm sure Russ could give you a more accurate average.
5) The Calculated Mean has increased from 1286 to 1291. However, when you take the actual Mean, it is 1283. If you are below that, you are in the bottom half of the site.
6) More people are, and have consistently been, in the 1200s, than any other group.
The numbers seem strange at times. Mostly because once someone's rating drops below a certain range, they leave the site. Even on a bell curve, the number of 1800+ players has increased faster than any other range. I guess if you are winning, why quit?
Quick note: Why are the Means different? My formula assumes an even distribution between 1200 and 1300. It isn't even, so it will be a little off.
