How come if I set my alarm clock I ALWAYS waek up just before it goes off, but if I don't set it I don't wake up?

And am I alone in this?

I have to same thing. When I want to wake up early I can usually do so, even if I don't have my alarm set. Yet if I do want to sleep out, I will not wake up early. Apparently you have some influence over when you wake up, by simply wanting to wake up at that time.
Not wise to get rid of your alarmclock though, it seems that the self instructing manner is not always reliable, especially under certain circumstances.

If you bang your head against your pillow 7 times when you go to bed, you WILL wake up at 7-o-clock, guaranteed, works every time.
Change the amount of bangs for the required time of course.

How does one 'do' half past eight? Fifteen past nine?

Half past eight - eight bangs and a softer bang.[maybe]
Don't think it works for quarter hours though - you'll have to get up a bit earlier - or later

I'm serious, this really does work. 🙂

You could try wiggling your toes fifteen times for quarter hours.
