Just saw the first Alien movie.I had seen 2 and 3,which I think are quite good, but somehow never got around to watching the first one.
What a waste of time, only good part was when they're at the table, eating, and the baby alien comes out of it's host, looks around, makes a funny sound and scoots off across the table.
Hilarious scene!
But other than that....guess I'm to spoiled by modern day visual effects.

You are right in that after seeing Aliens (2) the first is a letdown. I saw Alien (1) first and I must say that at the time it came out it was awesome! I have watched it again and wondered why I thought it was so good the first time around. Amazing how much more demanding we have become in our taste for movies.

I'm sorry, but you were spoiled if you saw Alian 2 first.

Alian one was the best, since you didn't know what was going on. Now everyone knows what the 'Alian' looks like, and what it does.

Back when the movie first came out... no one knew what was going on. Freaked the crap out of us! crap jumps out your belly, face hugger... nasty pods.

Now we know, and expect more. But imagine seeing this movie bofore you knew anyting about 'Alians'. It was a master of sci fi suspense!

AliENs. It is spelt with an E. Dammit.

Alien is the strongest one, aside from Aliens, Alien3 and Alien Resurrection. It is a bit weak, but it is the benchmark for all the other movies, and therefore, is the best. Alien3 gets better everytime I watch it, Aliens is OK,bit overblown (the directors cut is something like 2 1/2 hours, bit over), and Alien 4(Resurrection)...well, good FX compared to the others, and the directors cut rocks, but the original...uh-uh.

You have to remember when Alien was made in 1979, it was a kick @ss film. It dealt not only with serious horror, made all the more impactual by H.R.Giger's art, but had not only a sexual innuendo which was at the time somewhat taboo, but also cinematography and intensity that is only matched by films like The Shining. It is a masterpiece and knocks the socks off all the other 3 in the series. I dislike the fact that people nowadays expect a film to have special effects which cost $$$$$$$. Whether the CGI is good or not should not underpin the rest of the film. Alien, for me, will remain one of the all time greats in the horror genre, and the first in a plethera of space-horrors which will never match up.

well said. cgi is a means to an end, not an end in itself. i cite the case of blair witch vs blair witch 2 *wince*

I agree Alien is not as good as Aliens and Alien 3. But; way not as bad as Alien 4.... Up until number four it was a climbing rate in overall quality.

The most interesting part about Alien (1) was that Catptain Dallas(Tom Skerrit) got killed early on. He was the leading actor at that time and the only known actor in the movie just about. We were all thinking "well what the heck happens now, the lead guy just got killed". This was the first movie with a strong female character in the sci-fi horror genre. Ripley took us all by surprise!
I was like 16yrs old when it came out and we had a case of Mickey's big mouths at the drive in. But we all were aware enough to realize "hey the main guy just got killed, what the heck is going to happen to the movie? is it over allready?"
Yes, Ripley was the mind blowing point of the movie. Not special effects.

I'm an Alien buff too. I think the original movie was best for the reasons Phlabibit gave. What did you think of Alien vs Predator?

Aliens vs Predator was pretty awesome I though. Having seen Alien, Aliens, Alien3 and Predator I think it took ideas from both sets of movies and made sense. Thought the last minute was just added on to make room for a sequel though.

AvP screwed around with some of the mythology...go and read the graphic novels (or comics, whatever you want to call them), as well as the novels, and there is a common, well built mythos about both creatures...the movie seems to screw around with that too much.

Alien3 has a great visual style, and again, gets better with each viewing. Watching it the first time, give you a sense of like, well, what the hell, that was crap...but watching it about the third or fourth time you say, well, hold on, this is pretty damn good.

I thought AvP was pure rubbish, apart from what D34m0n has mentioned, the film itself was very poor, I'll spare you the rant though 🙂

I too thought Alien 3 was underrated, I thought it captured more of the original tension and the cinematography was better, it was more horror than action , whereas 2 was more action than horror.

I thought Alien 4 was just a bit damn average all round, nothing really stood out at all.
