Alternative rave

So what makes a rave a rave?

I mean, I need to know, because I don't dig drugs or energy drinks, and electronic music appeals to me only on certain specific moments, e.g. at the dentist's waiting room.

So, I want to rave, but I need to know if I can do tic tacs instead of popping ecstasy, and if I can rave with Wang Chung or Men Without Hats instead of Paul van Dyk.
