In terms of literature.

I generally enjoy American writing more than any other (Including British), it's got nothing to do with national pride, it's just an observation. What American books/writers do you guys like?

A couple that I'll name, that would have been inevitably named anyway, are Vonnegut, Twain, and Melville.

And another question - what do you guys think of Bukowski?

I'm a huge fan of Bukowski. If you like Bukowski, read "Ask the Dust", by John Fante (Bukowski's favorite book by his favorite author).

I've only read a couple of poems by Bukowski, I've been thinking about reading post office. Reading briefly about him reminded me of a less-happy Vonnegut. 😛

Post Office is great, my wife likes "Women" best. And Ham on Rye is right up there as well.

Gotta agree with Darvlay; Hunter Thompson is a maniac, worth reading.
