America refers to the United States. The continents of North America (including the U.S. and Canada)
and South America (including Argentina) constitute The Americas.

Don't forget Central America.

Central America is bordered by Mexico to the north, Colombia to the southeast, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Central America consists of countries: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaraguseven a, and Panama. The combined population of Central America is between 41,739,000 (2009 estimate)[1] and 42,688,190 (2012 estimate).[2]

The "United States of America" are those states of America that united in accordance with the United States Constitution, which is not necessarily closed to new entries near and afar. In fact, one state, Hawaii, is not part of the land masses referred to as the Americas.
