americian question to the floor

i was wondering why americian presidents only serve two- 4 year terms , providing they get re-elected of course. is this a matter of their constitution or law or was it as a result of somethihg that happened in the past and was therefore set in place .

any ideas would be great...............bill🙂

Originally a President could serve however long he was elected, in 4 year terms. This avoided lifetime rule, which is what they were escaping from by breaking from Britain. It wasn't until the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt while serving his 4th term in office in 1945 that the constitution was amended to limit the presidency to 2 four year terms.
