Well, I locked myself in a cupboard for nearly 4 months racking my brain to discover the secret formula on how to judge which film is better than which other film.
You see, there are tons of threads out there with top tens on films, but none of them actually have any basis other than taste. Which is great. But, how do you differentiate between "the big Lebowski" and "star wars". I mean, they're hardly comparable.
Being the scientist I am I felt we had to have a formula, an equation if you will, on how to judge a film. Yes, everybody's favourite films will still be different, but the interesting thing is that most people's favourite film will be a different one than they expect.
I was most shocked!
Before I go on, I need to make two tiny points:
My top five film list before I started was:
1. Star Wars (a new hope)
2. The big Lebowski
3. Pulp fiction
4. The Rocky horror picture show
5. The Godfather part II
And ever since Forest Gump beat Pulp fiction to the best film Academy award, I've never watchd the Oscars again.
Right. Here's the equation. You give a film points for each aspect:
Story line (0 to 5 points)
Acting (0 to 5 points)
Sound track (0 to 5 points)
Special effects (0 to 3 points)
Humour (0 to 3 points)
Excitement (0 to 3 points)
Drama (0 to 3 points)
Arousel (0 to 3 points)
Money's worth (One of the above scores which you think fitting + 1 point per half-hour the movie lasts, divided by 2).
You might use comedy for The big Lebowski, but special effects for Star Trek.
I ran my top 5 through it and a couple of other films. Look how my top 5 turned out:
1. Pulp fiction (23.5 points)
2. The big Lebowski (21.5 points)
3. Star Wars (20.5 points)
4. The Godfather (20.5 points)
5. The Rocky horror picture show (19.5 points).
BUT...
Grease (23 points)
The blues brothers (23 points)
Basic instinct 2 (5.5 points)
Full metal jacket (26.5 points)
And horribly: Forrest Gump (26.5 points).
This would mean that from my top 5 films, only 1 would remain in the top 5. And I should start watching the Oscars again...

No, I'm not the one with poor mathskills in case you were going to imply that. Here, look:
Story line (1)
We've seen it all countless times. Boy's an outcast, falls in love with unreachable girl, girl falls in love with boy, they kiss and live happily ever after. Bah!
Acting (1)
'Cause she's pretty.
Sound track (3)
A bit queesy though, right?
Special effects (0)
Humour (1)
Excitement (1)
The street race.
Drama (1)
Arousel (0)
Money's worth (Sound track+3/2 = 3) *
Total: 10
And I feel I gave a bit more than it's worth. 😕

For me, Grease was one of the first Tough guy, rich chick films I'd seen, so that makes the story for me slightly better than for you.
I loved the music, the humour and the acting (especially Rizzo).
What freaks me out is that it scored higher than Star Wars though...
Sometimes films can be more or less than the sum of its parts. You need to allow how well everything blends... u can have a great comedy film with a great soundtrack, but a soundtrack that doesnt fit the film (you could say that makes it a bad soundtrack, but id say the soundtrack has to be judged as the music itself).

The Bladerunners.
ps. This is not spam.
