I am hoping to get one serious response out of this. Just one. Please.
I bought some fish, and a tank.
One of the fish was elusively hiding in a tangle of water plants/algae.
I liked it. Noone could tell me what kind of fish it was, the store people didn't know it was in there.
I took it.
I looked online.
I think I've purchased a hypostomus plecostomus.
Also known as a catfish.
Is there anyone out there who knows anything about having a pet catfish. The thing is very cool looking. Or should I donate it now to the nearest catfish farm? It seems to get along with the other fish.

Originally posted by SJ247Catfish are quite a common type of pet fish actually; I've got a fair few. As they're algae eaters they help keep the tank clean. They'll only become aggresive if they grow larger than most of the other fish, and then most of this aggression is directed towards thier own kind. They don't eat the standard fish flakes, so be sure to get either some pellets, algae wafers or frozen spinach tablets for them to munch on.
Yes, I found online that this particular one is pretty toughskinned as far as temperature and other fish, and pretty unaggressive yet territorial...but have you actually heard of someone having a catfish in their tank?

I think some Chinese keep catfish as pets.
I maybe wong ,but it seems I have heard that before.

Originally posted by Daemon SinThank you, great information. I'll stop feeding him the goldfish food. And I read the spinach thing online as well, and was very close to giving him a chunk from the frozen spinach in my freezer.

Any suggestions on tank size?

As it says, the fish specializes in sucking algae off the glass. But it'll eat anything. And given a large enough aquarium, it'll grow pretty big itself and might accidentally start to swallow smaller fish - Tetras and Guppies.
I am very serious, have never had fish before.
