they were smuggled into the small cars, but they didnt quite fit, so they had to be bent a little.

I guess this works better in German... "Forgo" was the best translation I could find for "einen Bogen (um Ostdeutschland) machen", which literally means "make a bow/bend/curve (around East Germany)".
