When I was 15 I was in love with Bruce Springsteen's music.
Everything from Born to run through Nebraska to Born in the USA held me and my short attention fascinated.
In my bedroom there was a very large mirror.
Now, I'm not proud of this; let's get that straight from the start, but I would dress in jeans, a white T-shirt and tie a bandana around my head like a sweatband. I'd crank up the stereo so that Thunder Road was blaring as loud as possible, I'd pick up my badminton racket...and voila...I was Bruce Springsteen.
I could play whole concerts like this. Even, during the slower longs like "My hometown", I'd lay the guitar...I mean racket....down and act like I was singing into a microphone, all the time admiring my live-act in the mirror as thousands of invisible fans were applauding me.
It was during a magnificant rendition of "Sherry darling" during a benefit concert of the needy children in Africa, of which I was obviously the main attraction (U2, REM and Madonna having played before me) that I was striking my poses, talking to the audience and generally rocking and rolling like Chuck Berry on speed, when my brother walked into the concert hall...or bedroom, if you really want to pick nits...without me noticing.
The first I realised that there was one person more than my audience of 300.000 was when my brother started a slow clap. I ground to halt and turned the stereo off.
I remember standing there, sort of goofy, smiling and acting like I was testing how tight the strings on the badminton racket were and David (that's my brother) said: "Mark, you've really lost the plot, haven't you."
I learned how to play a real guitar after that.
