i had a nice group of pot plants - i live in a flat - and my herbs were coming alomg just fine ...

then the aphids came ...

they almost all seem to be a mess - except the mint - the mint rocks!

are there other aphid resistant herbs?

my non-edibles also seem to mostly be happy ... especially the bromeliad - it is taking over!

Get some ladybugs immediately. They rock as much as the mint and will do your aphids in like a burly Canadian with a seal club in one hand and a quota to reach.

basil is fairly indestructible, except if you don't water it, goes great on pizza n pasta too...

At uni I almost proved a linear correlation between the amount of soluble nitrogen in barley and the breeding performance of the bird cherry oat aphid.

The theory is that if you limit the nitrogen your plants get and you'll have fewer aphids. You'll have no plants either though, so not an ideal solution (I was looking at the application of fertiliser in agriculture).

Otherwise. Rosemary, Marjoram, Lavender (herb?), Thyme.

The general rule of thumb I use in my garden is fleshy juicy tasty herbs will get munched by aphids, the others probably not so much.

You can buy kits of ladybirds or lacewings both of which will defeat the aphids. Thing is they are cyclical, you'll probably find yourself with more ladybirds/lacewings and fewer aphids next summer anyway. My garden shed is full of the lacy ones 🙂

A shallow pan of beer,
Drowns them, so I hear.

A damp evening and a torch is a good way too.

If they're brown - grind them down,
IF they're black - put 'em back!

Are Black ones good guys,

Black slugs are black all over so far as I know. Yes they are good. They help make compost out of dead stuff. The brown ones (greyish too) tend to eat your favourite plants.

Snails - don't discriminate. Get rid of 'em all.

If you can attract toads or hedgehogs to your garden then they will help cull the slugs/snails.

🙂

i have crushed egg shells around my herbs, and so far no slug / snail damage.

I've read that soapy water will sort the aphids out. (+- 1 tablespoon of dishwash to 2 liters of water)

Your post is confusing. You talk about herb and pot plants and all you have is basil and rosemary.

Yep - concrete works every time. Not the garden....the slugs ;-)
