I work at a smoke shop in Little Armenia in Los Angeles. There's one Armenian guy who is a close friend of mine and the owner's who I've been talking to off and on about "his culture".

When I told him how horrible I felt about myself for not having a job before my friend hired me at this shop, he dismissed my feelings. He said that in his culture, young guys didn't feel bad about not working. They sometimes would just enjoy themselves, smoking weed and letting others support them, with no sense of responseability to society to work.

Another time, he told me about how Armenian teachers and students had an understanding; the students would slip $50 or $100 in a Christmas card with the understanding that the teachers would give them a good grade when they didn't earn it.

Then, the other day, he expressed surprise when I said I wouldn't have sex outside of a marriage or other relationship unless it was understood by both the man and the woman that it was an open relationship. He was surprised when I told him I wouldn't want to marry a virgin, because I like to party and I'd want a girl who I could relate to - who had partied and had sex when she was single. He said that in his culture, men had one night stands all the time, and they had no sense of sexual loyalty to their wives. But if the wife cheated...she'd get the **** beaten out of her. To him, women who had sex before marriage were "b****es" and deserved no respect. He said that some girls only did anal; these were "undercover b****es". But for men, it was only cheating if you got her phone number and kept in touch with her; one night stands weren't cheating. He was blown away that I didn't agree with him and when I told him I respected him less for his attitude. Apparently Armenian men get enraged when a guy looks at any woman they are involved with or related to or who is involved with or related to one of their friends too and will pick fights over it.

He says in Armenia it's understood that you can pay off the police to get out of tickets or being arrested...

Long live America! We have our wackos and some corruption, but at least we have a work ethic and a sense that at least we should be faithful, even if many men aren't. I haven't felt such disgust and contempt for a culture or so much pride in my country for a long time.

The guy - and several other Armenian men he asked to show

One in three American women are physically abused in the home.

Some cultures are just more open about it, that's all.

I don't find the word 'worthy' at all offensive.

My sister's boyfriend threw a cereal box at her once. She called the cops and they took his butt to jail. Same thing happened with my neighbor in Berkeley...her boyfriend (a man from Mongolia) punched her in the face and he went to jail that night.

You watch American TV and movies, and you see strong women characters all the time. Stuff does happen, but in our culture it's recognized as WRONG.

This Armenian guy I told you about told me a woman should be like a slave to her husband. They're sick people as a group - the men anyway.
