The HAPPY NEW YEAR thread

We (in these forums) are probalby one of the smallest and yet most resilient and committed online communities on the internet; I think that’s really cool especially given that the chess membership here is relatively huge.

This site has been a big part of my online social life since Feb 2008 and I do feel a little tingle of pride and privilege that I’ve been here so long. I know others have been here longer, some are still here since the beginning in 2004 (was it?). Lots of ups and downs, ins and outs, friends and frenemies and yet here we all are.

I wish each of you, and Russ, the very best in all aspects of our lives for 2026.

😊

@diver
Thank you, Dive, I remember you very well from the early days here, good memories. It feels like a good place to be when other parts of the world are shaky.

As a “participant” here since early 2004 I have got to say that it has been a lot of fun (my chess is well…nuff said) and I’ve met, both euphemistically and literally, some great folk here, even the ones who don’t share my MO. The world would be very dull if we were all the same. Keep it up Russ. Oh and Hapoy New Year to one and all.🎉👍😁

Just in case anyone is curious about how things were back in 2001,
Here are a couple of links that should show you how things were back "In the beginning....."

https://web.archive.org/web/20010304170336/http://redhotpawn.com/

https://web.archive.org/web/20010513125925/http://www.redhotpawn.com/index.php

When you open the link, there also is a date track at the top of the page that might let you navigate to numerous website captures made by the "wayback machine" website over the years.

You may also find that some of the links shown on the pages will still work to allow you to take a look at how the original forum looked, player lists, etc.

Some still work, and some don't.

@mwmiller,

You were one of the original members! Congratulations on your long tender here.

@Very-Rusty
Thanks!

Actually, as my user id is #16, I might be the person that changed this site from a UK only site into an international site. The first immigrant! @Russ could probably verify that.
