According to New England folklore in some quarters, Harvard Graduates wash their hands before rather than after.

Glad to hear that. For a brief moment my I had this horrible picture in my head. Now the reason for doing this was what? Perchance not wanting to transmit some germs to......well "it"?

I usually wash my hands before when at work, as my full time job often leaves me with greasy dirty hands.

Now I don't want to suggest elitism here but I think a Harvard graduate wouldn't be doing something (work) that might involve getting ones hands particularly dirty would they? Although perhaps they do some gardening or maybe "fixing" the yatchs engine or maybe even daddy or mumsys Rolls...... Nah they'd have hired help to do that. "Shall we do lunch at the club?"

could come from a tradition of people who used quills and inkwells, one may want to get that off first, or end up with a discolored little buddy

They do this so that when they pick their noses they are reminded that they have pee at some point to save them peeing their pants.

The stronger the smell the more recently they have peed and therefore the less likelihood they need to pee.
