To my fellow reprobates, idlers and dilletantes. I know that you, like me, have little else to do but sit in the dark, slowly frying your brain whilst you submerge yourself in the drone of the Japanese minimalist underground or the plaintive whine of the free folk scene.

Was therefore hoping you could share with me some of that precious esoteric knowledge to which you devote yourself and help me decide which weekend of All Tomorrows Parties to attend.

Weekend 1: http://www.atpfestival.com/events/line_up.php?event=22

Weekend 2: http://www.atpfestival.com/events/line_up.php?event=23

Any thoughts appreciated. And Darvlay, there'll be no open prejudice against the long haired, tree loving folk.

Excuse me? I resemble that remark🙂 Plaintive whine of the folk
scene? Where have you been for the last 29 years? Folk has gotten
positively steroided up lately. And what free folk scene are you talking
about? Most of the ones I listened to 5 years ago dissapeared.
And they weren't whiney, mainly just bad, couldn't believe someone
would actually let the public know just how bad they were.
Sometimes a gem appeared but not much. One really good one
I remember was a great rendition of a Steven Foster song,
"bad times come again no more" a whiney song if I ever heard one!
but this version by Betty Thompson, if I recall right was the best
I ever heard. Even James Taylor did it and usually he can sing
anything well but it didn't hold a candle to Betty.

Tis true - there were any number of abysmal records released (albeit in tiny numbers) a few years back, but I generally found that the live shows of bands like Sunburned Hand of the Man and NNCK were more entertaining.

Some of the good stuff (including their records) - Jack Rose, Matt Valentine & Erica Elder, Six Organs of Admittance, Charalambides. I guess the starting point for some of this is the music of John Fahey, Robbie Basho and the Takoma label generally.

And, point taken, the plaintive whine has been vanquished. The gutteral croak standing astride the maimed corpse.

Written lovely and poetically, at least someone is beginning to see the light! You can keep your head held high and enjoy a seat at Robert Burns' side!
As my good friend Lisa says: "Anything well written is better than everything not written." I'm sure we're gonna have a real good time together, my friend.
And anyways, anyone who mixes a VU song into their scribblings deserves a rec in my book!

God, Marcus, you should be so lucky to have to be faced with such a difficult dilemma. Both weekends look superb and each have their own high spots.

For me, on Weekend 2, seeing the Boredoms and Lightning Bolt on the same bill would be something hard for me to turn down but, if I remember correctly, you've already seen LB a couple times. I've also seen a lot of the bigger acts on that weekend, like Clinic, Shins, New Pornographers, S-K, Spoon, BSS, Brian Jonestown. All are nothing to shake a stick at (Except Jonestown, who suck something fierce, IMO).

Now Weekend 1: Oneida, Liars, Blood Brothers AND Ex-Models all performing the same day would be right up my alley. I've also seen all those bands perform and I would not hesitate in seeing them again. Especially with Kid Millions playing with Ex-Models, something we didn't have the privelege of seeing in Toronto (Ex-Models performed with taped drums 🙁) And the Mudhoney day also looks pretty stellar.

Final opinion: Go to both of them.

I think I'm gonna start crying. Why can't we have one of these in Toronto? 🙁

Merely fluttering your pale blue eyes in my direction doesn't necesarily mean I shall reciprocate and give you the gift of another rec, I'm afraid Shav.

Both weekends, now there's a thought. Perhaps I should spend the entire summer bumming around the festivals of Europe. After all, why rush straight back into work. Think the Boredoms might swing it, and it'll spare my ingrate friends too much exposure to the folk flavours of Devendra, Bert and co.

C'mon, Jesus deserves a second chance.

Cripple Crow, his latest I think, has more beat to it than the previous ones. I'm guessing he'll surprise with mariachi brass!
