If it wasn't bad enough before, now we have this new way to steal data from comps.

Nobody wants to steal your data from your crappy computers much less in the dumbest possible way that you’ve outlined below.

I envision a sad collection of early 80’s pornography and some pIcs of alluring Boy Scouts is all they’ll get. Oh, that and some bad folk music.

Get a decent computer with a solid state drive and feel the freedom blow through your soul like puff of digitised unicorn fart.

I fail to see how having a SSD would protect you from this.

But the whole thing seems far-fetched because you would need BOTH a) an infected computer and b) an infected smartphone within range.

I am with Suzy here. If I can infect an air gapped computer with a software that "morses" data I can surely get teh data far faster by the same channel by which I infect the computer.
It is possible for sure, but just imagine how long you need for a fan to establish the new vibrational mode. My guess is at least a tenth of a second, so you can "tap out" at a speed of 10 bits/sec which is much lower than my old acoustic coupler from the 80's...
If you jaust want to tap out a password, ok, but meaningful data??? How long can an unidentified smartphone lay aorund an air gapped computer?
