So I have avg loaded, I come to the comp this morning and like half my CPU is taken by the above. Obviously from AVG but it is running on all my log in's and when I go to task manager and process (XP) and hit 'end process', it says 'action could not be completed, access denied'. Which is strange, since I have admin rights on my login. Anyone know why access would be denied?
I guess I could delete AVG completely and see if it goes away there but that sounds a bit extreme.
Anyone else run into this?

What is AVG.UI.exe?
So I deleted AVG and that stopped that AVGUI thing. I was worried it was a trojan or something just hiding out as AVG but that seems not to have been the case. CPU back to 1 and 2 % usage now.
Need to find an AV suite not so invasive. Anyone know a good one? Not AVG?

AVG is an anti virus software suite, the UI stands for User interface. I have been online for over an hour and it is still running half of my CPU power.

I found a 2 year old copy of Norton AV I had not even opened yet, dug it out and installed it on two computers.
The interesting thing there was AVG announced it found no threats on my computer but Norton found a trojan and 15 adware cookies.
I ran Superantispyware after Norton and it found 268 more adware cookies. So it goes to show you just one AV does not do the trick.
I also have tried Malwarebytes anti malware and it didn't find much while Superantispyware found a bunch. So I deleted Malwarebytes and only use Norton and Super now.
The Norton I used was a 2010 version and when it came to the update page, it updated with 152 megabytes! Usually it is only a few megs. I guess it made up for 2 years of missing updates.

At the very least, different heuristic algorithms find different possible threats. It's not necessarily that one 'missed' anything.
Most non-critical threats picked up by AV apps these days are usually just false positives anyway.
A more cynical view is that security software companies make damn sure they find SOMETHING after you install their software, giving you that sense of "Phew! Thank goodness I installed YOU!"
Norton is a worse offender than AVG, performance-wise, and also notorious for being more difficult to get rid of later than getting red wine stains out of white carpeting.
