It's not a social experiment. It's an in-field experiment. RHP forum is a controlled environment in comparison to observational experiments. 😉

If you'd like further details PM me. Oooops, you're on my ignore list. 🙁

Ballpoint Pens encourage people to write more because you can always find one when you need one.
They are easier for left-handed people because they don't need specially ground nibs.
They can be readily carried in a handbag or even clipped to a pocket.
You don't need to keep in your desk drawer a bottle of easily knocked over indelible staining liquid.

Disadvantages: they don't do much for handwriting skills, they occasionally leak, and they always run dry at the most inconvenient moment.

[aside] you can't conduct studies or surveys within RHP forums, it's a self-selected subset of another self-selected group of people.

Freeze in Canada, during the winter, if left in your car/truck/SUV. Pencils don't.

Edit: OK in most parts of Canada (Maybe not some places in B.C.)

Apparently banks find them very valuable as they tend to chain them in place.
