So not everything has detoriated things are less toxic today than in my childhood.
@Ponderable saidI’ve never heard of that. My compost heap is pretty big and hot, starting with about 30 barrowloads of green wood-chip topped up with pigeon manure. It all breaks down in 6-12 months.

So I have no animals so no maure for my compost, which is of course much smaller.

Have you ever made banana skin tea? A real boost for roses etc! Chop the skins up and soak with water for a few weeks then strain and dilute to use.
