I think you could have knocked about five to ten of those British style euro's off the price, if you only went to the conventional market instead of the supermarket for your vegetables, grains and industrial tortured animals.

But would they be safe? At least in my neighborhood, the vegetable markets are fairly disgusting. That said, my Mom shops there, and I never get sick from her food.

In the days when I felt I could take my entire lunch break I bought everything fresh from the market, I just wish they'd open outside of 9-5.
