I loved the original series when I was a kid. Unlike my chess ability, though, my tastes in sci-fi have matured. I tried to watch the originals in their re-released DVD form, and it was excruciating. Fully 40% of that show was recycled space footage. How many times can we watch the same Viper veer off to the right while hitting the turbo? How many times do we need to see someone's thumb on the joystick? I couldn't even finish it, it was so bad.
I don't even think of the original series in connection anymore, except as the general storyline backdrop. Every now and then the producers and writers include a nod to the plots of the original series, and that's about all I need.

has there really been a single leading female character in the last ten years that wasn't strong and independent? I can't think of any. even the nerdy 'willow' from buffy skins a guy alive and repeatedly saves the world with her fellow 'strong, independent female characters'... it has become a cliché.
