A few movies come to mind, i personally liked the Clint Eastwood westerns they were good to watch. Also movies like Gunsmoke ,High Noon,The magnificent seven and Unforgiven were some of my favourites.
Just like to hear what other peoples favourites were or the best Western that you think was ever made.
Already a good and extensive list mentioned, but I'll sound off in agreement.
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is the best Western ever. I think all of Leone's Westerns (sans A Fistful of Dynamite) are masterpieces.
Once Upon a Time in the West is just as good as TGTBaTU but I think the Civil War background and the chemistry between Blondie and Tuco just makes TGTB more entertaining.
A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars more are about equal, though I like Fistful better because I think Yojimbo is better than either of them.
Id put John Ford in there as well.
Ford and Wayne well nigh created the genre with Stagecoach. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and The Searchers are better IMO and belong up there among the all-time greats.
Wayne's movies with Howard Hawkes were also high quality, El Dorado and Rio Bravo are both classics.
The War Wagon (with Wayne and Kirk Douglas) and True Grit (The Duke's Award winning role!) are other Wayne classics that come to mind.
Eastwood's made great movies: High Plains Drifter, Pale Rider, Unforgiven, Outlaw Josey Wales are all great Westerns.
I would also give credit to Akira Kurosawa for his 'Easterns'. He and Toshiro Mifune are the best Director/Actor combo in cinema history IMO: Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Seven Samurai, Roshomon, Throne of Blood are all 4 Star films.
not all Western analogues but all awesome films.
on a funny side note, I'd consider Kurosawa/Tatsuya Nakadai (Ran!) is a close second, though likely in a tie with the likes of Eastwood/Leone 🙂
