yeah-erm-i actually meant mazarocci for suspension, not manitu. but manitu are good too...

as for the seeing them to see if their good-not really cause all the crappy makes try to copy the good ones. although if they've got all the fancy shindiggery like them being adjustable, no covers, and a long travel (80mm is rahter nice and not too expensive...and when your just cycling along they're not gonna bottom out)

i yeah-i would recommend suspension. my dads bike is void of it, and he seems to like it. but i hate it! i mean-you hit a bump and you know you've hit a bump. it isn't a pleasant experience. but then again, sometimes you mgiht want to know about it...tbh, it's all personal opinion.

and as for disc brakes. they can be very heavy, but stop you like a dream! cheap ones'll be heavy, and will eat up your break pads. often, V-brake'll be better than cheap discs!

also, disc brakes and suspension'll make your bike look more expensive. and if it's parked outside then you mgiht not always want it to look expensive...you could probubly just get a decent bike done by a really good company, but with a rigid frame and V-brakes. so it won't look expensive so noone'll steal it. but it'll do exactly what you need and, as it's a good make, will last longer. and it'll be lighter etc...

Alas, I can just about ride one and even then I tend to fall off quite frequently. Never mind mend tyres or whatever.

BUT

What do you want the bike for? Where do you live?

See, if you live in say Rotterdam, you will want a very simple and cheap bike ...[text shortened]... t sort of terrain you'll be riding. Or write it down here and I'll be able to advice you.

I guess I should have mentioned all that in my original post. 😳

Canberra is not particularly hilly; more reasonably gentle slopes than flat, though. The crime rate isn't bad at all, but I will be parking it around at night sometimes. All fairly well lit, but not always busy areas. And I'll be sticking to bike paths for the most part, but I am prone to taking short-cuts.

What do you reckon, shavixmi? 😉

I might just do that.

(How did sexual innuendo make it into my bike thread?)

Good advice.

I didn't think about the suspension attracting thieves. I only really considered the possibility of girls. Perhaps a snazzy helmet with flashing lights would be the safer option.
