I am planning on buying myself a new computer but wondering what the best optical drive is???

I know you can buy a 16xdrive etc with + or - dvd write and CD write but dont know what it all means! LOL!!!

I want to use it for general activities but also burning games/cd's/films etc.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I just got one for about 80 bucks, an LG and it does all of the regular burns, R, RW, etc, DVD burner. Just use the Plus (+) format, its more versatile. It has one nice trick though, you can turn the DVD over and use the burning laser to scribe an image on that side, permanent since there is no ink. The software for that comes on the disc that comes with the drive. Its amazing how they are down to 80 bucks and just 4 years ago or less they were almost a thousand.
And maybe soon to be outmoded by newer technology with dozens of GB's on the same kind of disk. But the important thing is to get the best burning software, CD burning software won't work for a DVD burner so you have to update that. Windows media does though if I am not mistaken and is a viable option but it doesn't have the bells and whistles of the best software. Nero is good but there isn't enough room here to do a good job of reviewing burning software, just google in DVD burning software and you should find a good bunch of articles about that. BTW, I just won both Cats challange games against Redhouse!

Aye. I think the prices are going through the floor due to new formats coming out. I think Sony is developing something new for it's next Playstation gizmo. As for software, a lot of new burners come bundled with third party burning programs as a freeby. Namely Nero OEM.

PS, can you etch pint pots and other glassware with your LG? 😛

That would be a nice trick since glass is transparent, eh. Even if it was flat thin and disk shaped the same size as a DVD or CD! The dvd is plastic so it doesn't take much laser power to zap them.
There are other burning software packages besides the ones that come with the burners, like Alcohol, NTI, Deepburner. They all have features that others don't. Alcohol for instance, can make images of another CD or dvd, every bit.
