Well for one, balancing the budget isn't even on his radar, so that makes him pretty liberal if fiscal sanity is not a consideration. He tries to come off as a moderate, but that's not too difficult when you stand for very little.
Kerry as a candidate is very, very weak. Doesn't have any policies, talks only in generalities, pretty much is Bush-esque in his clarity on issues. The only thing he has going for him is he's not Bush. Which may be why Edwards is gaining steam, if not a tad too late.
