One of the brightest stars in the firmament of chess has gone out.

A favourite quote from the big man: "I love the moment when I break a man's ego".

In true chess style, the game is over, the king has been toppled.

If you haven't read it already, read the great book about the World Championship with Spassky, entitled Bobby Fischer Goes to War.

And look up some of his games and gape in awe. For instance, his artistry with the Sicilian Najdorf, which should arguably be called the Fischer Variation anyway.

Um. PS - he was a jerk.

I have to say... after watching a piece on Bobby on ESPN today he is the quintessential example of undiagnosed mental illness. It is very sad to see such a great mind waste away into the mess he was.

I hope he finds some peace now.

may he rest in any sort of peace he can/may find

i'm not into his style of play (1. e4), but i can appreciate what he's done with chess, over the years
